The solid you get, nicknamed Gabriel’s Horn (or Torricelli’s Trumpet ), narrows endlessly yet stretches forever along the axis. Torricelli proved in 1640 that: volume = π cubic units (finite) surface area = ∞ square units (infinite) [ 1 ][ 3 ] That means you could pour exactly π ≈ 3.1416 litres of paint inside it—yet no warehouse of paint would cover its outside. Students still gape at the chalkboard. 2.
